Alt.Pub.Kacees Presents Online Balderdash!

Because of a parade of morons who kept signing up for the Balderdash game without reading the rules, and most recently a particular jerk who was banned and then tried to re-sign up as another person (with the same domain name, from the same IP address, using the same computer...amazing what email headers tell about you!), the mailing list for this Balderdash game is now CLOSED to strangers.

The only way to play now is to be vouched for by an existing player, and they're not going to risk their game on someone that isn't a trusted friend. You can also get on the list if you're a friend of mine, and I mean friend, not someone I've exchanged one email with. I have to know you enough to trust you not to be a jerk.

As a result of this change, entries will no longer be accepted from alt.pub.kacees, although rounds will be posted there for those who wish to follow along. You now must be on the mailing list to play.

However, all new players will still be required to email me with the following information:

  1. Your name - this can be your first name only, if you like (although you may be required to provide an initial if there is another player with the same first name).
  2. A statement indicating that you are 18 years old or older.
  3. A statement indicating that you have read through the rules, both Part 1 and Part 2 and understand how to play this ONLINE version.
  4. A statement indicating that you are aware you'll be added to a mailing list .
  5. A statement indicating that you have read and agree to the terms of the Balderdash Privacy Policy.

Friends of mine can just send me that info (if I don't know who you are, I'll delete it and add your address to my spamblocker, so don't bother if you're not someone I know). People on the list should tell me that they're going to vouch for someone, and then have that someone send me the above information along with a statement of who is vouching for them.

Furthermore, make sure the person you are vouching for understands that they should not lie to me when making those statements. If I have any reason to believe they are lying, I will eject them permanently from the game. This includes asking me an obvious question that's answered in the rules right after telling me they've read the rules. I'm happy to answer questions not covered there, but if they're going to make a statement that they've read the rules, they'd better mean it.

Mailing list addresses will NEVER be sold, rented, leased, or otherwise given to any third party. They're just for this game.

Players on the list can also sign up for the nag-reminder service, by request. This means, when I remember to do it, I'll re-send the start mail a day or two before the deadline. You MUST request this specifically; you won't get this just by being on the regular mailing list.

There is no penalty for missing/skipping rounds. The scores for the sets are done by average (although I do maintain a total as well, for those who like to know how they did in that regard). So if you skip a round, your average does not change. There is no pressure to play; this game is structured for people with busy lives who don't always have time to participate. In fact, you are heavily discourage from playing a round unless you know you'll be around during the following week to vote. See the rules, as listed below, for more details on how to play.

NOTE: I reserve the right to accept or reject players on my sole discretion. I reserve the right to postpone or cancel games at my discretion. I reserve the right to alter the rules for the this online version at my discretion. I reserve the right to do pretty much anything I like with this game, other than breaking the law or other obviously horrible things. This is a free service given of my own free time, not a paid subscription, so I refuse to be beholden to anyone over it.

The version we're playing is Absolute Balderdash, which is copyright 1993, Gameworks Creations and was distributed by Canada Games. It seems that the current "Beyond Balderdash" available from Hasbro has at least some of the same cards, but I don't know if it's identical.

Current rounds will not be posted on this webpage, but they are always posted in the pub itself. But you can access the following resources from this page:

Balderdash is a trademark of Gameworks Creations, formerly under license by Parker Brothers and Canada games, now under license by Hasbro. No written permission has been obtained for this online play, but I do legally own a copy of the game, and as far as I know no written permission is required for that.
